About Me
dlnwgnr/xaldyn, artist, new york, 1996
for my entire life, the computer has been my medium of
expression. we are in the era of digital creation, and though
the computer is used as a vessel for an infinite number of tools
in the form of software, the computer is itself a single tool.
the internet is the convergence of every medium from all of
history transferred over a single fiberoptic cable. different
interfaces were created to share different forms of art created
with the same language. though it makes it simpler to
understand, the ability to create links across the web means
singular pieces of art can exceed the limitations of one virtual
medium and seamlessly continue onto another. as we experience
this through a screen, the bigger picture is painted by our
imagination. with virtual reality looming over the horizon, and
world building the digital space, it is becoming more and more
apparent how our reality is replicable through the multiplexing
of various signals through complex mathematics.
my art seeks to illuminate this concept by simulating the look
and feel of computing technology from the time before computers
were universally used to create the media we consume. ypbpr is
about the conversion of analog data to digital data so it can be
interpreted, copied, transferred, manipulated, displayed, and
executed by the machine. much like our senses are converting
information to electrical impulses to be interpreted by our
brains and multiplexed into a memory. i try to challenge myself
to subvert the limits of contemporary social media by recalling
the era of experimental social media and personal webpages.
though not long ago, the rapid rate of change in the digital
space makes it hard to remember what it used to feel like. i
wished i was able to fully take advantage of the technology at
the time and use its limitations to my advantage, but i was too
young. The more and more time i took to learn these concepts it
felt like it was too late due to the ever changing landscape. we
have reached a point where we are self aware of how digital
expression has been changing the way we perceive reality and how
it has been projected onto the physical world. let's reflect on
the era before we were faced with our current reality.
